Natural pigments
Chalk from the French Falaises and not the White Cliffs of Dover.
Powdered terracota for Red Ochre.
And a fresh free range egg.

Carving starts
This type of wood turned out to be rather "noisy", so I had to limit the hammering as much as I could. Can't risk any fights with the neigbours.
Careful gouging worked, and proved far more relaxing.
